Using Social Media For Your Small Business
Social media is being used by small businesses to help build their brand and attract loyal customers while on a modest budget. The SES session "Small Voices, Big Impact: Social Media for the Little Guy" focused on ways smaller companies can improve business and increase sales.
Stay tuned to WebProNews and the WebProNews Video Blog for continued coverage of the Search Engine Strategies New York event.

Jennifer Laycock
Jennifer Evans Laycock, Director of Social Media, SiteLogic said social media is the bleeding edge of marketing.
"There are a million clones out there, there is always the next big thing. When you are creating your marketing plan it’s important that you don’t get caught up in chasing the next big thing," said Laycock.
Focus on established areas of social media and don’t worry about being out there in front.
Laycock likes Flickr because images as a communication media are very powerful. The people coming together in Flickr are a more engaged audience. There are hundreds of members in discussion groups about thousand of topics. Tying your Flickr community to a blog post via a compelling visual representation about your product or site, you have a highly targeted and engaged user base on Flickr that you can leverage.
She likes Twitter because it’s a really low barrier of entry to join and leverage the network. It’s very simple to get started and news spreads fast.
Laycock said the great thing about YouTube is how many people use it and how many people search on it. YouTube is second only to Google in terms of search query volume. She likes YouTube because you can tag videos, use related videos, overlay ads, and run ads alongside your video. There are lots of ways to get your message in front of a large audience.
LinkedIn is good because you can leverage your network with questions and problems. "Let’s say you are looking for contacts at company x. You can look up people from company x, see how connected you are to those people, then call the people you know that know them and try to arrange an introduction," said Laycock.
Christina Kerley, Marketing Specialist, ckEpiphany, talked about how social media has changed. "Mostly what’s changed is how much more we rely on social media to look into products before a purchase," said Kerley. Consumers look for other consumer’s opinions of products at a higher rate than ever and it is only growing.

More Confirmation of Paid Twitter Accounts
You’ve heard endless rumors, speculation, and theories as to how Twitter will monetize itself. Biz Stone has now confirmed Twitter will be launching its own fee-based services this year after watching others make money of Twitter themselves. The Wall Street Journal Reports:
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone says the San Francisco start-up is watching the outside initiatives closely as it prepares to launch its own fee-based services this year, but doesn’t view them as competition. "We want to work with those companies that are already making an effort," he says.
Mr. Stone says Twitter recently hired a product manager to oversee the development of commercial accounts. The accounts would offer users more features in exchange for a fee, but Mr. Stone says Twitter hasn’t set a launch date for them.
"This makes perfect sense," says Dan Frommer at Silicon Alley Insider. "There’s a lot of stuff companies would pay Twitter for, such as a way to verify the company rep’s legitimacy; to more analytics and information about who is reading their Twitter page; to better tracking features to see what people are saying about their company."
Back in early February, Stone told Fiona Ramsay, "We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them." He then continued, "We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts."
I guess we now just have a little better idea of when to expect something. Sometime within the next 9 months?

Twitter Getting More Integrated with Search
Twitter is working on integrating search into its interface more than it has been since it began featuring the search feature on the home page. It’s only in the testing stage for a select few users at this point, but in the future, if you perform a Twitter search, the results will show up right on your home page instead of a different page altogether.
Since this was announced on April 1st, I had to determine whether it was an April fools joke or not, but it appears to be a legitimate piece of news.
"We went back to the original sketch and made everything far more awesome," says Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. The sketch he’s referring to was posted when Twitter first acquired Summize, which ultimately became Twitter’s search feature.

"This way of experiencing search is aligned with Twitter’s simple approach," says Stone. "By default, the tweets you see on your home page are from sources of information that you have curated over time—in other words, the accounts you chose to follow. When you search, you’re asking for any tweets that contain the word or phrase you’re interested in right now."
A new feature has been added to Twitter search as well. You will be able to save searches for ones you perform on a regular basis. This will simply place the term in your sidebar, making it easily accessible.
There’s no date set for when the changes will go into effect for the masses, but Stone says they’re collecting a little more feedback and will get them out as soon as possible. He says the technical infrastructure to support it is mostly in place.
Google’s Still Not Buying Twitter
Likely, Boomtown’s Kara Swisher gets tired of being the TechCrunch Google-rumor-debunker. Maybe not. She seemed to enjoy reminding readers about the Michael Arrington grapevines sprouting out tales of Google buying Digg and Bebo, neither of which ever happened. This time it’s Twitter.

Kara Swisher
In the comments of TechCrunch’s rumor report that Google was in late-stage talks to buy Twitter, Arrington notes that posting a rumor is a good way of shaking out information. Maybe next time he should just give Swisher a call and save everybody a lot of trouble. Swisher, married to a Google executive, generally has the better inside scoop.
Here’s what a Swisher source had to say about it: “Seriously, no negotiations, no deal, nada.”
That’s more in line with Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s earlier statement about sitting on Google’s money until the economy gets better. With unemployment at a predicted peak last month, that could be as early as this summer, if you’re the extra-optimistic type. Although CEOs of multinational corporations are notorious liars about everything, Schmidt’s generally made good on what he puts out to the public.
Swisher’s sources say there have been preliminary discussions between Google and Twitter about real time search and “product stuff.” That seems to match up with AdAge’s report that Google will be using Twitter to sell AdSense ads. Advertisers will have the opportunity to stream their five most recent tweets all across the AdSense network.
If Google made an offer for Twitter, an offer that would have to be near the billion-dollar range, it might be because every Tom, Dick, and Harry outside of Google really, really wants Google to buy Twitter. While Tom, Dick, (Mike) and Harry are pushing the deal, Robert Scoble reminds his audience that Google historically has been where good microblogging companies go to die.
Remember Jaiku? Dodgeball? If so, it’s only because you were aware of them before Google bought them.

Social Media Marketing StrategiesHow to use Social Media to generate branding and a personal connection with your visitors.
TypePad Connects You Via Google, Yahoo, AOL, Wordpress, Etc.
Six Apart has made it simple for nearly anyone to sign in to TypePad Connect with other existing accounts via OpenID. If you have an account with Google, Yahoo, Blogger, Vox, LiveJournal, Wordpress.com, or AOL, you can easily sign in.
"If you’ve already tried out our recently launched commenting service via TypePad Connect, you know that we built in very basic support for OpenID sign in from the start," explains Six Apart’s David Recordon. "We did this because we know that just as the future of traditional media wasn’t a small group of large publishers controlling all of the news, the future of the social web isn’t a small group of large social networks controlling everyone’s identity. Today we’ve made it even easier for anyone to sign in, leave a comment, and have a TypePad Profile (see mine) without having to know their OpenID URL or even what OpenID is."
Basically what this means, is that anytime you read a blog post on any blog (that supports Typepad Connect-powered comments), you can leave a comment using your identity from an account you already have. This is just one way the web is becoming more unified among varying services, and you can expect to see a lot more of this kind of thing in the future.
Recordon says that now any bloggers that are using Typepad Connect powered comments have over half a billion people who can sign in and comment instead of being anonymous. This could significantly reduce the amount of anonymity in the Blogosphere. Not entirely of course, but for all of the people who don’t want to take the time to sign up for an account just to leave a comment will be able to easily make themselves known in another way. This should be good news for people who like to utilize blog comments to increase brand exposure.
Top Blogs’ Favorite Platforms Identified
Whether a given blogger takes pride in being a weirdo or feels safer as part of a crowd, a new report will help him (or her) sort out exactly where he (or she) stands. Pingdom staffers took a close look at which platforms are most common among the most popular blogs.
WordPress grabbed first place with no problem, with 27 out of the top 100 blogs (as ranked by Technorati) using it. The platform’s fans range from big corporations like the New York Times to individuals such as Chris Brogan.
Then came TypePad, with 16 followers, Blogsmith with 14, and Movable Type with 12. There are some pretty impressive names to be found on their sections of a user list, as well. (Think Wired properties, Autoblog, and Boing Boing, respectively.)
We’ll skip down to Blogger next. It seems like a bit of a defeat for Google to find it in ninth place, being used by only three out of the top 100 blogs. Worse still: one of those three blogs is the Official Google Blog, landing the platform in "my mom thinks I’m handsome" territory.
Ah, well. Hats off to the Royal Pingdom crew for the research they did, and good luck with the transfer if you decide to choose a new blog platform for yourself or your company.

Make Money By Promoting Solo Ads
by admin on Jul.03, 2009, under Affiliate Programs
There are many ways to make money on the Internet. Of course, the first thing you need to do is to source for a product or service to promote. This may or may not be a product that you own. If you do not have your own product, you can always promote somebody else’s product by being an affiliate.
An affiliate is simply a person who promotes a merchant’s products or services through an affiliate link. When someone clicks on an affiliate link, the link tracks the sale and credits the affiliate with the appropriate commissions. This is the perfect way to start an online business as there is very little risk. You don’t need to invest huge amount of dollars to develop products and you can start earning right away.So what do you do as an affiliate? Now that you have something to promote, you need to find out where you can promote these products. A little market research wouldn’t hurt here. The best affiliate always takes time to learn more about their target customers. The goal is to find out how to reach these people. In other words, you are looking for targeted traffic. There are many sources of traffic on the Internet. How you drive traffic depends on how much you know about each traffic generation method. One of the easiest ways to drive targeted traffic is through classified ads.Solo Ads.Solo Ads are single emails that go out to a large database of targeted people who have agreed to receive emails due to their interest in your specific product or service. They have one headline, followed by a few lines of texts. Online, the format is similar. These ads work very well because the visitors who visit these sites are already looking to buy something. You only have to make an attractive offer to them and they will buy.The key here is to write an attractive ad. So what is a good classified ad?A good classified ad has a unique and attractive headline. For example, saying, “Advertise Today” is not as effective as saying, “Let us do the Advertising for You! We’ll bring the customers right to your Web Site! - Hurry!” Your ad should then go on to describe the offer. Usually, you don’t have many lines to include too much detail. The goal here is to get the visitor to click on the link in your classified ad. So there is no need to give away too much information about your offer. Just give one or two benefits, then go on to say, “For more details, click on this link.”You may be surprised to find that different ads yield different results. So test our different ads. Create new ads, and see if you can get better click through rates. Usually, you get a pretty good idea of what to write just by observing the ads that others have created. If you see an ad being used repeatedly, you can be sure that the ad is working well. Simply peel the ad, modify it a little, and use it as your own.
