Facebook Testing New Ad Format?

The DiggBar Cometh

Remember in late February when a new Digg Toolbar was uncovered via an image on Flickr? It was said to be coming out to take on StumbleUpon and TinyURL (and similar services) at the same time.

Well now we get a closer look at that as Digg prepares to roll out the DiggBar. Kevin Rose posted about it at Digg the Blog today and included the following video, which shows just what it does.

DiggBar from Kevin Rose on Vimeo.

According to Rose, the Digg Bar allows users to:

- Digg directly on the destination site: No more awkward toggling between the story page and Digg.

- Easily share stories: You can now create a shortened Digg URL to share on Twitter, Facebook or via email. You can also type digg.com/ before the URL of any page you’re on to create a short URL.

- Access additional analytics: See how many times a story has been viewed.

- View comments while on the story page: Clicking the ‘Comments’ button expands the DiggBar to show the top comment, latest comment, and most controversial without leaving the page.

- Discover related stories: Clicking the ‘Related’ button expands the DiggBar to highlight similar stories.

- See more stories from the same source: Clicking the ‘Source’ button expands the DiggBar to show you more Digg stories from that source site.

- Discover random stories: Click the ‘Random’ button and you’ll be brought to an entirely new, unexpected story.

So basically it is StumbleUpon meets TinyURL meets Digg with even more. I think this toolbar is going to be quite popular. It even gives you direct access to post shortened URLs on Twitter and Facebook. This thing’s going to get a lot of use.

It’s not available to everyone just yet, but from the sound of it, you won’t have to wait much longer if you can’t get it yet. Starting today, Digg is rolling out the DiggBar.

Cuban: NBA Makes Money with Twitter

We’re hearing more and more about companies and organizations making better use of Twitter as a revenue driver than Twitter itself. As far as entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is concerned, the NBA is one of those organizations.

Cuban has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for tweeting about the refs. Fanhouse has all the details, but long story short, Cuban used the popular social network to vent his frustrations about a certain officiating crew, was fined for it, and has Tweeted about the incident since.

Mark Cuban Tweets

"Of course, the Twitter issue raises an interesting debate about whether or not Cuban should be allowed to discuss the referees in a place like social media or on a blog (obviously, speaking directly to a group of media members won’t cut it, but at what point do we start considering this a First Amendment issue?)", says Fanhouse’s Will Brinson.

Brinson makes a good point. His tweets were just as public as a press conference though (especially considering that the press often goes to Twitter for stories), if not more so. If he just wanted to make mention of the incident to friends, perhaps direct messages would have been the way to go.

The whole thing is just another instance of the " think before you tweet " concept. Cuban may have had an error in judgment, though the tone of his Tweeting hasn’t suggested that he sees the fine as too hard a hit.

One of the Biggest Affiliate Marketing Mistake

by admin on Jun.30, 2009, under Affiliate Programs

This is the most common and one of the biggest mistakes in affiliate marketing. Majority of affiliate marketers do not include list building in their marketing plans. The usual strategy most affiliate marketers do is to find ways to send traffic to their affiliate links, thinking that a viewer might get interested with the offer and make a purchase at the onset of seeing it.

The truth is that site visitors do not really make a purchase upon seeing a web page, no matter how enticing it is. It could happen in a stroke of luck but it is very less probable. Most visitors do a lot of viewing first before ending up with buying. In doing this, the potential customers see more information and learn how they will really benefit from the products or services. They must first be confident with it before they trust and make a purchase.

A great solution to this concern is list building or capturing leads. It is best to have traffic as it is the lifeblood of online businesses but it is still better to gather contact information for future marketing strategies which is really efficient. When a list is created, it is possible to keep in touch with the prospects and give them the necessary information they need in order to find solution to their primary concern. Sending them emails with the information they need is also the start of a good business relationship.

Furthermore, there must be an auto-responder to support list building. It is an automatic response or message to the person who gave his or her contact details. It could simply be an acknowledgment or a bonus offer. If there is already a huge list, then having a web site could be the next in the business plan if there is no site setup yet.

After setting up the auto-responder and the web site, it is best to formulate a short course about internet marketing where an aspirant could really learn the online business. This course must be kept related to the products to sell. To do this, the subject must first be determined, and then the course must be outlined. All the topics and articles must be written like talking directly to the reader. This is effective as it helps the readers adapt to it.

Once ready, having a form where one can sign up for the course would surely help in increasing traffic conversion at some time. This must be in the form of a squeeze page. It is a simple web page that summarizes the course and has a brief list of its benefits. It has an opt-in form where people can leave their contact details in order to take advantage of the course.

Sounds like a way to success in affiliate marketing and it surely is; but it starts with building a list. It is important to keep a bond with the potential customers. This is not only for the current products being offered but also for the future products or programs. If an affiliate marketer has a good relationship with his or her customers or potential customers, then he or she will surely have them even if there are new programs or products and services to offer.

Blogs Are For More Than Just SEO

There are many benefits to publishing a Business blog and improved search engine visibility is one of the most popular.  It’s pretty common advice to hear: start a blog and the fresh content will attract links, improving your search results.  Such tactical advice can be very effective.

Unfortunately, the advice gets filtered and distorted, not unlike what happens in the game “telephone” kids play. Pretty soon one or more blogs are implemented for the sole purpose and expectation of improving search engine visibility and nothing else. At least nothing else that’s accountable.

What’s wrong with this picture?   Blogs started solely for SEO objectives will inevitably fail.

Here are a few reasons why:

1. Lack of planning and oversight - After the honeymoon of starting a blog wears off, those tasked with writing content often get distracted by their other responsibilities. Bit by bit, posts look less and less like keyword optimized web pages and sink back to the familiar writing styles common to public relations and corporate marketing. Gone are the keywords that consumers are searching on. Gone is the traffic that used to come from search engines.

If SEO efforts persist, they can get sloppy without ongoing oversight either by an outsite SEO consultant or an internal blog champion (more about that in our next post). Keyword usage in blog posts can become disparate or worse, evolve into a keyword stuffing exercise.

2. No passion for the topic - With over 100 million blogs indexed by Technorati, it’s a wonder what happened to the 90% or more than have been abandoned or that don’t post more often than every 4 months. It takes commitment, thought out ideas and a sincere interest in a topic to be able to blog about it on an ongoing basis over the long term.

Can you imagine watching a 30 minute TV show or 2 hour movie you’re not interested in? How long does that last? How about a job you’re not interested in? Do you really excel at it? Do you do the best job possible and and do you stick with it? No, no and no.

As a result, bloggers who are not personally interested in a topic will encounter blogger’s block quickly and with a shallow level of knowledge on what’s being blogged about, readers lose interest quickly and do not return, subscribe or link.

3. SEO as we’ve known it is a dying breed - The loophole based SEO tactics of yore that brought incremental ranking advantages are being efficiently dealt with by search engines. So are paid links.  SEO will always have value of course, because as long as content can be searched on it can be optimized.

However, when it comes to blogs, consumer information discovery trends are involving social networks and social media at an increasing rate. Recommendations are competing with search. When looking at the web analytics of our blog and client blogs, social media traffic is in the top 5 referring sources of traffic. Blogs are social and social media sources will become increasingly important for many Business blogging efforts in the coming year.

So, what can a company do to build upon and benefit from, the compounding equity that grows with long term blogging and SEO efforts? I’ll be answering that question specifically in tomorrow’s post on 5 Tips for Successful Blog Optimization efforts.

In the meantime, have you started a blog only to lose interest or stop contributing to it? What was your reason? What would you do differently?

3 Important Tools For Your Internet Business!

by admin on Jun.29, 2009, under Affiliate Programs

A craftsman’s work is only going to be as good as his tools and that applies to building your Internet business as well. An Internet business entrepreneur can have all the knowledge in the world but without access to the proper tools to get the job done, they would be stuck and powerless. In this article I will discuss three important tools that you must have in order to build your online marketing business.

As you begin your new business you will find that there are all kinds of tools and programs that people will be trying to sell you and they will tell you that you have to have them to succeed. The reality is that most everything you will need is available online and can be found for free. There are a few things that you will have to pay for but only a few.

Autoresponder;

I listed this tool first for a reason, it is probably the most important tool that you can have if your intention is to build a long term Internet business. An autoresponder allows you the ability to contact your subscriber list on a regular basis so that you can build a report and trust with them. This allows you to not only share your knowledge with your market, it also allows you to get feed back from your list as to what they need and how you can best meet this needs. This is one tool that you should not skimp on. Get the best service that you can and it will more than pay for itself in the long run.

Keyword tool;

You will need a good keyword tool in order to find the keywords and phrases that people in your market actually search for. This way you will be able to optimize your pages and your entire web site for those words and phrases which will allow you to be found in the search engine results pages. There are many keyword tools available both free and paid. Starting out you can get by just fine with some of the free options and later on you can buy a good paid tool if you find that you need more.

HTML editor;

An HTML editor allows you to create web pages easily without needing to understand all the code that goes into it. This is called a WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) editor. You can simply type in your content and arrange it the way you want. You can change the types of fonts and colors and sizes of the text and add graphics and create working links right on the page. All the while, the actual HTML code to do all that you want it to do is being created in the background. This is and essential tool for building all kinds of web pages for your Internet marketing business.
